Musicians, athletes, movie stars … ASTRONAUTS! We rounded up the home screens
of our favorite people to see what their digital sidearms say about them

Brad Smith

Quarterback, Buffalo Bills

During the offseason, Smith is focusing on staying in shape and spending time with his new baby girl. He’s also spending a little time with his iPhone—the quarterback, wide receiver, and return specialist keeps his Chapel app, which streams Sunday messages, and his Bible Study app front and center, but when his mind is in the game, he turns to the Hudl app to watch team videos. We also dig the Harmony Link app, which lets you control your home theater via Logitech’s remote control system, and the DocuSign Ink app, which is helpful for signing football contracts. Smith, a University of Missouri alum, was a Jet first, then started with the Bills in 2011.

Smith’s award: Most advanced smartphone user

The Talent Known as Trey Burke

by Eddie Rhodman, Jr.

Who says there aren’t any superstars in college basketball? According to various ESPN analysts there aren’t any because of parity and style of play. While the madness of March continues, one athlete has emerged as a premier athlete and arguably a potential super talent in NBA, University of Michigan Point Guard Trey Burke.

Why Trey Burke you ask?

Most players want to be the best but are not willing to be team players to win. Kobe Bryant has shown he can take over a game at anytime but also be a coach and leader on the floor to win a game. Trey Burke competitive nature is similar to Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. If you don’t believe me see how he wants to take the last shot to win. Even when losing, Trey still has a refuse to lose attitude. With a heart of a champion, players love to play with him and ride with him to win.

Trey’s desire to be great stems from playing on great teams in AAU, high school and college. No matter who was on his team, including his best friend Jared Sullinger, he played for his game to be noticed. One thing sports fans love about athletes is when they are poised under pressure. As my late father said, “Pressure bust like a Pipe, can you handle it?” Trey lives for it, seeks it out, with his “even kill” attitude and looks forward to stepping up in that moment.

As many coaches have come to know, there are many great players in basketball but not all players have basketball IQ. Burke game is adaptable, meaning he can play multiple roles by scoring, team player, on-ball defender depending on the situation, he gladly accepts the coaches challenge to help the team WIN.

Most importantly, Burke is following the plan by God’s design. His faith in his heavenly father to keep the faith will have him be successful on his journey. Once you have an intimate personal relationship with God, and let Him lead, only person that can stop you is yourself by not trusting what your Heavenly Father has destined for you. As the scripture says, “When you obey God, He will accomplish through you what He has purposed to do. One will be blessed when God does a special, God-sized work through you”.

So what is being seen by Trey Burke no one even at Michigan could have fathomed to see this school basketball turn around but God? You too will be blessed when God does a special, God-sized work through you.

Trey Burke: The Brand

It is the assumption that athletes have to be loud, brash, alpha male but Peyton Manning, Kevin Durant and others have shown humility is admired and it can be rewarded. Burke is humble, but still is a driving force to be the best guard and player in college basketball. He doesn’t get caught up in the hype and view himself as others do. He leaves it on the court, enticing fans awaiting to see what he does in the next game.

One thing that goes without saying is strong family values a lot of athletes can always appreciate having no other support than their family. The Burkes, Ronda and Benji, are heavily involved in Trey’s life and he has a great support system that goes a long way in life when nothing else matters. Companies love to see that in an athlete, especially mothers, who are buying products for their kids.

Everyone knows the almighty dollar in collegiate sports has certain college brands being supported and known even outside their region. Not since “The Fab 5” has Michigan been in the spotlight and promoted so much that I have talked to alumni near and far, even those who are Big Ten rivals school, they all say, “I hate Michigan but respect how Trey Burke plays on the court.” Fans especially, alumni are proud to see the team success over the last two years. Usually most players when leading a team or building school awareness it takes the entire 4 year college career. Trey has built a legacy in just under two years that will not only last statically (average pts and rebounds not last seen since the Hall of Famer Magic Johnson), but for years to come. When you consider leaving a minimally ranked program, but return to lead it to the Top 10 ten, it shows a lot of character and dedication and companies love to see a player have a loyal fan base.

From Subway to Gatorade commercials, endorsed athletes most have a desirable trait, charisma. Trey is a person that people, players and fans want to be around, but most importantly are excited to watch his talent. Many may not want to admit or some forcefully admit it, but they are intrigued and excited to watch is passion in his performance.

Players say they want it bad and will work hard. Trey’s prep school documentary showed he has drive and effort to win by any means. He has a leadership quality that wins at all costs on and off the court. When backed into a corner and the game is on the line, Michigan coaches see Trey as the “go to guy” to win the game. Trey hates to lose (i.e., see Penn State road lost). He’d rather win with no stats then win scoring 50pts. NBA point guards are more scoring guards but his future NBA coach will get a team player who loves to help everyone be better on the court to win and put his ego aside to do it.

Athletes are sought after to endorse a range of products and brands because they are usually fit, easy on the eye and desired. Trey Burke’s talents are not limited to his play but his undeniable style and flash will continue to impress the masses. Kudos to Michigan for believing in talent known as Trey Burke. When he transitions because he is built to perform professionally, that prestigious university will make history once again as the school to a legend.

Every pro athlete knows there’s a life after sports, and that’s why some of them decide to explore other fields during their off season. When Bills Wide Receiver Brad Smith wanted to learn the ins and outs of the fashion industry.. he got himself an internship with Men’s Health Magazine during New York Fashion Week. During his week with the magazine , Smith did “normal intern” duties, such as researching, packing bags for photo shoots, and helping stylists on set. Once he proved himself, he got to contribute to the Fashion Week coverage for www.menshealth.com , by attending several fashion shows and even interviewing some of the designers backstage, including Nautica’s Chris Cox ! He joined Diana in the Hot Sauce for Wednesday, March 20th, to share more about his experience and some of the fashion industry tips he picked up along the way!
