May 7, 2012, Port Washington, NY – Five hundred and seventy orphaned animals found homes this weekend, as North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, kicked off its 18th Annual, Pet Adoptathon. More than 2,500 animal shelters and rescue groups around the world joined the Animal League for this premiere global pet adoption event, sponsored by Purina ONE®, to help save the lives of homeless animals.
At Pet Adoptathon Headquarters in Port Washington, a 36-hour adoption event was held. Beginning Saturday, May 5th at 9:00 AM and ending Sunday, May 6th at 9:00 PM, Tri-state area animal lovers came to find their new family members. As wide-eyed adopters made their way through the adoption center, they were delighted to see the largest selection of puppies, dog, cats and kittens – purebreds and plenty of Mutt-i-grees®! By the end of the weekend, hundreds of families and individuals opened their hearts and homes to a loving pet.
To help kick- off the event on Saturday, NCIS: Los Angeles Actress Renée Felice Smith, Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver Brad Smith and HGTV Personality Tanya Marchiol all shared their passion for the Animal League’s life-saving mission and were filled with emotion and joy as they watched animal after animal leave the Port Washington campus to go to a loving home. Scooby-Doo, the Animal League’s Pet Ambassador for Pet Adoptathon, made his way through the crowds and encouraged the anxious adoptees to find a new best friend to take home with them.
Pet Adoptathon activities will be extended throughout the entire month of May in an effort to save more animals’ lives. For more information on Pet Adoptathon activities throughout the month, call the Hotline at 800-214-4308 or visit www.AnimalLeague.org.
About Pet Adoptathon
The first Pet Adoptathon, in 1995, began as a local North Shore Animal League America adoption event, with the goal of finding homes for each pet in the shelter. Encouraged by its success, the Animal League invited shelters and rescue organizations worldwide to participate in Pet Adoptathon. Eighteen years since its inception, Pet Adoptathon has helped find loving homes for over 300,000 animals.
